One of my favorite movies last summer was The Way Way Back about a 14-year-old boy who goes on a summer vacation to a Massachusetts beach house with his mother, her overbearing boyfriend, and the boyfriend’s teen daughter. My favorite scene is when Allison Janney’s character, Betty, who lives next door to the beach house, first
stumbles out the front door, wearing tight pants and holding a drink in one hand. I didn’t realize she was even in the movie, and her performance was one of the highlights of the film. I started thinking of other characters she has played in both movies and television shows through the years, and I think she is one of the best and most versatile actresses working now.
From her role as outspoken White House Press Secretary C. J. Cregg on The West Wing to a domineering mother to Anna Faris in Mom and Chris Colfer in Struck by Lighting, Allison Janney proves herself over and over again as one of the most talented actresses today.
Here is a list of some of Alison Janney’s different projects:
TV Series: Mom – Bonnie (Pictured with Anna Faris as Christy) (2013-2014) |
Movie: The Way Way Back – Betty (2013) |
Movie: Struck By Lightning – Sheryl Phillips (Pictured with Chris Colfer as Carson Phillips) (2012) |
Movie: The Help – Charlotte Phelan (Pictured with Emma Stone as Skeeter Phelan) (2011) |
Movie: Juno – Bren MacGuff (Pictured with Ellen Page as Juno MacGuff and J.K. Simmons as Mac MacGuff) (2007) |
Movie: Hairspray – Prudy Pingleton (Pictured with Amanda Bynes as Penny Pingleton) (2007) |
TV Series: The West Wing – C. J. Cregg (1999-2006) |
Movie: American Beauty – Barbara Fitts (Pictured with Wes Bentley as Ricky Fitts) 1999 |
One of my favorite movies of all time is American Beauty, released in 1999 and starring Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Thora Birch, Wes Bentley, Mena Suvari, Peter Gallagher, Chris Cooper and Allison Janney as Barbara Fitts, who is very withdrawn and quiet throughout the entire movie.
In addition, Wes Bentley, an Arkansas native, was just a teenager when he appeared in a short film, Serendipity Lane, that was filmed in Arkansas and my brother, Chuck Smith, did the Cinematography for the movie. During the production of the film, Wes came to my parent’s house in Little Rock get something for the film so I now like to tell my friends that Seneca Crane from The Hunger Games has been in my parent’s kitchen.
Allison Janney currently has several projects in both pre and post-production so I can’t wait to see her next award winning performances!
